Cobalt and bacterial growth, with special reference to Proteus vulgaris.

چکیده

For the past five years we have been engaged in an investigation of the effect of cobalt on the growth and metabolism of bacteria, especially of Proteus vulgaris. The emphasis on Proteus followed requests for aid in the control of growth of this penicillinand sulfa-resistant organism in cases of peritonitis, cystitis, and eye infections. Interest in cobalt as a growth inhibitor of microorganisms has been extremely limited. Such studies as have been made deal primarily with the concentrations of the metal necessary to kill the cells of bacteria, yeast, or paramecia after a given period of exposure (Bokorny, 1905, 1913; Krauss and Collier, 1931; Johnson, Carver, and Harryman, 1942). Apart from observations on the therapeutic use of cobalt in the treatment of tuberculosis (Renon, 1915; Rondoni, 1920; Mascherpa, 1929), no attempt, so far as we are aware, has been made to study in detail the nature of the action of cobalt on bacteria. In this paper we shall consider only those aspects of the growth-inhibitory effect of cobalt on bacteria, particularly P. vulgaris, which are of a cultural rather than of a metabolic nature. The results of our metabolic studies will appear subsequently.

The Investigation of Anti-bacterial Activity of Holothuria Leucospilota Sea Cucumber Extracts (Body Wall, Guts and White Strings) at Chabahar Bay in Oman Sea

Echinoderms are independent and quite special branch of world animals. Sea cucumbers are among the strangest members of echinoderm class regarding their structure and physiology. These fauna have been tested with regard to anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-coagulants, anti-virus, cytotoxic, hemolytic and anti-HIV features. In this study, the antibacterial activity of Holothuria leucospilota...

Antibacterial effects of the aqueous extract of Lycopersicon esculentum mill native to South Khorasan of Iran against four species of gastrointestinal bacterial pathogens

Introduction: Raising antibiotic resistance has led the human community to more frequent application of herbal medicines. The tomato fruit, scientifically called Lycopersicon esculentum mill, is an important source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, all with beneficial effects on human health. The present study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial effects of tomato aqueous extract on four ...

In vitro comparison of effects of extracts of Ailanthus altissima and Salvia nemorosa on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus vulgaris

Introduction: Some plants have antiseptic roles and often do not cause harm to humans or animals. In this study, we try to introduce plants to disinfect spaces and surfaces contaminated with bacteria so that toxic substance does not remain in the environment. Materials and Methods: Ailanthus altissima and Salvia nemorosa extracts were used against lyophilized Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphyloco...

Effect of metallic ions on the growth, morphology, and metabolism of Clostridium perfringens. II. Cobalt.

Cobalt plays an incompletely understood rule in cellular metabolism. Schade (1949) reported that Co++, in concentrations varying from 1 to 100 parts per million, inhibits the growth of representative aerobic and anaerobic species of gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Levy et at. (1949) observed that the addition of Co++ to nutrient broth inhibits the growth of Proteus vulgaris although r...
